नौ दशकों के लम्बे जीवनकाल में नन्द जी ने कई सामाजिक कालखंडों में अपना जीवन जिया। झालावाड़-उदयपुर का सामन्ती-काल, आज़ादी की लड़ाई और देश-निर्माण के सपने। आज़ादी के बाद बराबरी का सपना भी टूटा और बहुत बाद के दिनों में उन्हें निजीकरण और वैश्वीकरण के सवालों के उत्तर भी खोजने पड़े। ये साक्षात्कार उनके हर अनुभव का आईना हैं। इस पुस्तक के कई साक्षात्कारकर्ता नन्द जी के साथी, सहयोगी कवि और प्रियजन रहे हैं। विदेश और देश के अन्य भागों से आए विद्वज्जनों ने भी उनसे बातचीत की है। इन लम्बे साक्षात्कारों में वे अपने पढ़ने-लिखने, स्मृतियों और बचपन के दिनों की चर्चा भी करते हैं। पुस्तक की विशेषता यह है कि इसमें शामिल सभी साक्षात्कारों को नन्द जी ने अपने जीवन के आख़िरी वर्षों में स्वयं सम्पादित और चयनित किया था। व्यवस्था के पुनर्निर्माण की आशा अब भी बची है, क्योंकि ये जो बहुत-से सपने हैं, वे काल्पनिक नहीं हैं। वे मनुष्य के अस्तित्व की बुनियादी शर्तें हैं—जैसे मनुष्य की स्वाधीनता, जैसे मनुष्य की समता। इनको छोड़ना सम्भव नहीं है। और तब मुझे यह प्रतीत होता है कि चाहे जितने दिन तक चीज़ें उथल-पुथल होती रहें लेकिन अन्त में समता और स्वाधीनता के प्राप्त हुए बिना मनुष्य बच नहीं पाएगा। —इसी पुस्तक से
