- Description: कितने आश्चर्य की बात है कि समाज का जो तबका समाज की सफाई रखने का काम करता है, मानव बस्तियों को रहने लायक बनाता है, गंदगी और बीमारियों से दूर रखता है, समाज ने उसी वर्ग को अपने से अलग कर दिया! इससे बड़ी विडंबना और कोई हो ही नहीं सकती कि समाज के लिए सबसे उपयोगी वर्ग को ही अछूत करार दिया गया और घृणा का पात्र बना दिया गया। इस वर्ग को अस्पृश्यता का अभिशाप तो झेलना ही पड़ा, कदम-कदम पर समाज के अत्याचारों का भी सामना करना पड़ा । दुर्भाग्य से आज भी सिर पर मैला ढोने की कुप्रथा बनी हुई है जबकि आजादी के दिनों से ही समाज के एक बड़े तबके को इससे मुक्त कराने की कोशिश होती रही है। गाँधी जी ने आजादी के आंदोलन में भंगी-मुक्ति का सपना देखा था। अनेक स्तरों पर काम होने के बावजूद भंगियों की स्थित में सुधार नहीं हो पाया है। महाराष्ट्र में इस प्रथा को नरक सफाई कहा जाता है, जिसमें भंगियों की कई पीढ़ियाँ लगी हुई हैं। भंगी अब किसी एक धर्म तक सीमित नहीं रहे। उनमें सिख, हिंदू, मुसलमान सभी हैं। वे अस्पृश्यों में भी अस्पृश्य हैं। लगभग हर धर्म में उनकी स्थिति एक जैसी ही है। घृणा, तिरस्कार और अपमान का दर्द ही उनके भाग्य में लिखा है। अस्पृश्यों में भी जो अस्पृश्य हों, उनके जीवन में भला किसी की क्या दिलचस्पी हो सकती है? लेकिन लेखक-द्वय अरुण ठाकुर और महम्मद खडस ने बड़ी ही ईमानदारी से नरक सफाई के काम में लगे लोगों के जीवन का मार्मिक अध्ययन प्रस्तुत किया है। ‘नरक-सफाई’ महाराष्ट्र के वरिष्ठ बुद्धिजीवी और अनुसंधाता डॉ. य. दि. फड़के के कुशल मार्गदर्शन में ‘समता आंदोलन’ के कार्यकर्ता अरुण ठाकुर तथा महम्मद खडस द्वारा कड़ी मेहनत से जुटाए गए साक्ष्यों पर आधारित महत्त्वपूर्ण दस्तावेजी पुस्तक है। आजादी के बाद भंगियों की जीवन-स्थितियों का बारीकी से अध्ययन करने वाली हिन्दी में पहली पुस्तक—‘नरक- सफाई’ !

- Description: बहुमुखी प्रतिभा की धनी एवं स्वतंत्रचेता मल्लिका आधुनिक हिन्दी साहित्य के आरम्भिक दिनों की एक महत्त्वपूर्ण, लेकिन उपेक्षित शख़्सियत हैं। अकसर उनका उल्लेख भारतेन्दु हरिश्चन्द्र की प्रेयसी (धर्मग्रहीता) और उनकी बौद्धिक सहायक के रूप में किया जाता है जबकि एक रचनाकार के रूप में उनकी स्वतंत्र पहचान को स्वीकार किया जाना और उनके योगदान का यथोचित मूल्यांकन अब भी शेष है। उन्होंने कई उपन्यास लिखे। गीतों और लेखों की रचना की। पत्रिकाओं के सम्पादन-प्रकाशन में महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई—बालाबोधिनी में उनकी भूमिका तो थी ही, रहस्य चन्द्रिका पत्रिका का भी उन्होंने स्वतंत्र रूप से प्रकाशन किया। यही नहीं, उन्होंने मल्लिका चन्द्र एंड कम्पनी चलाने की ज़िम्मेदारी का भी निर्वाह किया। सम्भवतः उन्नीसवीं सदी में लेखन करनेवाली हिन्दी-क्षेत्र की वह अकेली स्त्री हैं जो लेखन के साथ-साथ प्रकाशन-सम्पादन में सक्रिय दिखाई देती हैं। बांग्ला और हिन्दी के बीच अपने लेखन से एक सेतु बनाने का उनका प्रयास भी उल्लेखनीय है। इस परिप्रेक्ष्य में मल्लिका के योगदान का सम्यक् मूल्यांकन हिन्दी-क्षेत्र के पुरुष-केन्द्रित साहित्यिक-सांस्कृतिक इतिहास को दुरुस्त करने के लिए ज़रूरी है। वास्तव में मल्लिका के बिना न तो उन्नीसवीं सदी के कथित ‘हिन्दी नवजागरण’ की कहानी पूरी हो सकती है, न ही उस नवजागरण के प्रवर्तक भारतेन्दु हरिश्चन्द्र की। उम्मीद है, मल्लिका की समस्त उपलब्ध रचनाओं का यह प्रामाणिक संकलन इस ज़रूरत को पूरा करेगा।
