"रूस के महान् लेखक लियो टाल्सटॉय 19वीं सदी के एक सम्मानित लेखक थे। युवावस्था में कुछ समय उन्होंने रूसी सेना में नौकरी की और इसी दौरान क्रीमियन युद्ध (1855) में भाग लिया। अगले वर्ष ही उन्होंने नौकरी छोड़ दी और लेखन आरंभ कर दिया, जिसकी नींव उनके बचपन में ही पड़ चुकी थी। उनके उपन्यास ‘वॉर ऐंड पीस’ (1865-69) तथा ‘एना कैरनीना’ (1875-77) विश्व साहित्य की महान् रचनाओं में शामिल हैं। आर्थिक दृष्टि से अति संपन्न और सम्मानित होने के बावजूद वे आंतरिक शांति के लिए तरसते रहे। आखिरकार सन् 1890 में घर-बार और धन-संपत्ति त्यागकर वे गरीबों की सेवा करने लगे और 20 नवंबर, 1910 को कंगाली की हालत में गुमनाम वृद्ध के रूप में मृत्यु को प्राप्त हुए। मानव मन को छूनेवाली सामाजिक समदर्शिता और पारस्परिकता का बोध करानेवाली अगणित पठनीय रचनाओं के महान् लेखक की प्रेरणादायी जीवनी।"

अज्ञेय हिन्दी के बहुआयामी, साथ ही विवादास्पद लेखक हैं। प्रेमचन्दोत्तर काल में ‘गोदान’ के आदर्शोन्मुख यथार्थवाद के बाद मनोवैज्ञानिक यथार्थवाद का यह मॉडल इस दृष्टि से भी महत्त्वपूर्ण है कि इसकी प्रभावछाया में साहित्य का एक बड़ा भाग आता जा रहा है। द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध की छाया, भारतीय स्वाधीनता-संग्राम, साहित्य में पश्चिमी प्रभाव की छाया, किशोर से युवा के बीच के कालखंड, युवा मन के अन्तर्द्वन्द्व, अहंकार, विद्रोह और सेक्स के नकारने-स्वीकारने की मनःस्थितियाँ, प्रयोग, रूमानियत से लबरेज़ तरल लाक्षणिक विडम्बनात्मक व्यंजना में रसे-बसे हैं अज्ञेय के उपन्यास—‘शेखर एक जीवनी’ (दो भाग), ‘नदी के द्वीप’ और ‘अपने-अपने अजनबी’। ‘शेखर एक जीवनी’ में एक विद्रोही की निर्मिति उसके घात-प्रतिघात से उसके विकसित या विपर्ययग्रस्त होने की दास्तान है। क़िस्सागोई के अभ्यस्त पाठकों को इस उपन्यास में एक नया ही अस्वाद मिलेगा—स्मृतियों का विश्लेषण, परिनिष्ठित काव्यात्मक और व्यंजनात्मक भाषा की बौद्धिकता की तप्त ख़ुशबू। ‘नदी का द्वीप’ अपनी काव्यात्मक सूक्ष्म दृश्यात्मक परिनिष्ठित भाषा, प्रेम की उदात्तता, व्यंजना और बौद्धिकता के स्तर पर ‘शेखर एक जीवनी’ की अगली कड़ी है जिसमें रेखा, गौरा, भुवन का या फिर इनके साथ चन्द्र मोहन का एक त्रिकोण बनता है जो गहरे झाँकने पर कामायनी के श्रद्धा, इड़ा, मनु के त्रिकोण का प्रतिबिम्ब लग सकता है। प्रेम कथाएँ चाहे अनचाहे त्रिकोणात्मक बन ही जाती हैं, जिनमें किसी-न-किसी कोण को स्थगित होना होता है। तीसरा उपन्यास ‘अपने-अपने अजनबी’ इस अर्थ में प्रायोगिक और प्रायोजित उपन्यास है, वहाँ जान-बूझकर एक नाटकीय स्थिति का निर्माण किया गया है। इस स्थिति में मृत्यु की प्रतीक्षा कर रही दो औरतें हैं—‘योके’ और ‘सेल्मा’। पृष्ठभूमि विदेशी, ‘योके’ युवा है और ‘सेल्मा’ वृद्धा। बर्फ़ का पहाड़ टूटकर उस घर पर गिरा है और दोनों औरतें एक तरह से बर्फ़ की क़ब्र में क़ैद हो गई हैं। तथता के शिल्पकार अज्ञेय काव्य-भाषा, व्यंजना और आत्मवाची कथा संरचना करते चलते हैं। पात्र भी उन्होंने ऐसे ही विशिष्ट चुने हैं। उपन्यास का ढाँचा भी परम्परागत उपन्यास लेखन से विद्रोह है।

In 1947, the Constituent Assembly appointed him as the chairman of the Drafting Committee constituted for drafting the Constitution for independent India. He played a key role in building the Constitution. He was born on 14 April 1891 at Mhow (near Indore), a small town of present Madhya Pradesh. Good schools were arranged by the then government for the education of the children of all military personnel. Therefore, despite being from a low caste, he got a good education. When India became independent in 1947, he adorned the post of the Minister of Law. He had made a clarion call—‘Lost rights are never regained by begging... but by relentless struggle’. For his remarkable work, he was posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ in the year 1990.
