कहा गया है कि अगर पृथ्वी पर कहीं स्वर्ग है तो वह काश्मीर ही है और ‘ऐलान गली ज़िन्दा है’ उपन्यास इसी स्वर्ग के हाशिये पर दरिद्रता, अज्ञान और अभावों में पल रहे लोगों की संस्कृति और जीवन-संघर्षों को बहुत अन्तरंग विवरणों के साथ उजागर करता है। जहाँ आज धर्म, जाति और भाषा के नाम पर आदमी-आदमी के बीच दीवारें खड़ी की जा रही हों, वहाँ ऐलान गली के अनवर मियाँ, दयाराम मास्टर, संसारचन्द आदि लोग हिन्दू-मुस्लिम साम्प्रदायिक सौहार्द के प्रतीक बनकर उभरते हैं। दूसरी ओर बेरोज़गारी के अन्धकार में पल रही युवा पीढ़ी है, जो रोज़गार की तलाश में बड़े शहरों की ओर दौड़ रही है। अवतारा ऐसी ही युवा पीढ़ी का प्रतिनिधि चरित्र है, जिसे आजीविका के लिए मुम्बई जैसे महानगर में जाना पड़ता है। महानगरीय सुविधाओं और चकाचौंध के बीच वह ख़ुद को अजनबी और अस्तित्वहीन महसूस करता है, उसके ज़ेहन में ऐलान गली प्यार के समुद्र की तरह पछाड़ें मारती है।

ऐलान गली के निवासियों के आपसी सम्बन्धों के विविध आयामों को इस उपन्यास में इतने विस्तार और सूक्ष्मता से चित्रित किया गया है कि एक समूचे समाज का रूप उभरकर सामने आता है। वस्तुतः अपने तमाम पिछड़ेपन के बावजूद ऐलान गली वहाँ के प्रवासियों और निवासियों के दिल-दिमाग़ में उसी तरह ज़िन्दा है, जिस तरह फूलों में सुगन्ध।

चन्द्रकान्ता कश्मीर केन्द्रित अपने विपुल कथा-लेखन के लिए हिन्दी जगत में ख़ासी लोकप्रिय हैं। अपनी कहानियों में उन्होंने देश-विभाजन के तत्काल बाद कश्मीर संकट से उपजे हालात से लेकर 'जेहाद' के नाम पर जारी आतंकवाद से झुलसते कश्मीर की आबोहवा और अवाम के दुःख-दर्द का अद्यतन चित्र उकेरा है, जहाँ वे यथास्थिति का चित्रण-भर करके नहीं रुक जातीं अपितु प्यार, ईमान और इंसानियत से लबरेज़ पात्रों का सृजन कर कट्टरता एवं हिंसा के विरुद्ध पुरज़ोर आवाज़ उठाती हैं। कश्मीर ही नहीं, देश-दुनिया की हर उस मानवीय त्रासदी को चन्द्रकान्ता अपनी कहानियों में जगह देती हैं जिससे एक संवेदनशील रचनाकार का मन आहत एवं उद्वेलित होता है। वे उस भ्रष्ट व्यवस्था और मनुष्य विरोधी तंत्र को कठघरे में खड़ा करती हैं, जिसने तेज़ी से बदलते समाज में चतुर्दिक संघर्ष से घिरे मनुष्य की आन्तरिक अनुभूतियों को कहीं गहरे दफ़न कर दिया है। व्यक्ति और व्यवस्था की मुठभेड़ में वे पूरी प्रतिबद्धता के साथ प्रत्येक विषम परिस्थिति एवं प्रवृत्ति की समीक्षा करती हैं; तत्पश्चात् उन तथ्यों का अन्वेषण करती हैं जिससे मनुष्य की अन्तरात्मा को मरने से बचाया जा सके और इस प्रकार एक बेहतर कल के लिए मनुष्य के स्वप्नों, संवेदनाओं और स्मृतियों को सिरज लेने की चिन्ता चन्द्रकान्ता की कहानियों का प्रस्थान-बिन्दु बन जाती है।

वर्षों से निलम्बित साहस को बटोरकर, अपने सुरक्षित दैनिक व्यापार के दुष्चक्र को तोड़‌कर जब हम यात्राओं पर निकलते हैं तो वह सिर्फ बाहर की यात्रा नहीं होती, भीतर की भी होती है; अपने भीतर, अपने आपको नया करने की यात्रा। असीम तक फैले इस विराट संसार से एकमेक होकर स्वयं को एक नवीन रूप में देखने-जानने की यात्रा।

‘जहाँ-जहाँ क़दम पड़े’ पुस्तक में संकलित, वरिष्ठ कथाकार चन्द्रकान्ता के यात्रा-वृत्त इसी अहसास के साथ की गई यात्राओं का विवरण देते हैं। यात्राएँ जिनका आरम्भ उत्सुकता से हुआ, और जो पूर्ण हुईं इस बोध के साथ कि ‘छोटी-छोटी यात्राएँ कभी-कभार हमारी चेतना में दबे अनुत्तरित प्रश्नों के उत्तर’ एक आभा के साथ हमारे सम्मुख रख देती हैं।

अमेरिका, सिंगापुर, डिज्नीलैंड, सी वर्ल्ड, योसिमिटी नेशनल पार्क, पशुपतिनाथ धाम, जगन्नाथ धाम और उनकी अपनी वादी श्रीनगर, कश्मीर के अलावा इस पुस्तक में अलग-अलग संस्कृतियों के बीच सामंजस्य की कोशिश करते अमेरिकावासी भारतीयों की कथा भी हमारा ध्यान खींचती है।

इन यात्राओं से प्राप्त अपने अनुभव के आधार पर चन्द्रकान्ता सही ही कहती हैं कि दुनिया के अलग-अलग हिस्सों में अपने देखे-समझे को जीवन्ततापूर्वक अंकित करना भी एक तरह से इतिहास ही लिखना है, एक ‘जेनुइन इतिहास’, जो उन्होंने इन यात्रा-संस्मरणों में सम्भव किया भी है।

अपने-अपने कोणार्क यानी कश्मीर से ओडिशा का सफ़र। कश्मीर की सरसब्ज़ वादी में जन्मी और पली-बढ़ी चन्द्रकान्ता को भारत के अनेक प्रान्‍तों में रहने-बसने का मौक़ा मिला। लेकिन ओडिशा में बिताए गए छह वर्ष उनकी सर्जनात्मकता के लिए अमूल्य बन गए। उन्होंने वहाँ की जीवन-शैली, लोक-रंगों और परम्पराओं की महक महसूस की है, जिसका जीवन्त प्रमाण है ‘अपने-अपने कोणार्क’।

ओडिशा की संस्कृति धरोहर—पुरी और कोणार्क, जीवन के दो पहलू; सम्पूर्ण जीवन का फ़लसफ़ा यहाँ मौजूद है, जिसे लेखिका ने ऐतिहासिक एवं भौगोलिक परिदृश्य के साथ वर्तमान की सच्चाइयों से जोड़कर देखा है। उपन्यास की नायिका कुनी के माध्यम से उन्होंने आम ओड़ि‍या जन को उसके विगत और वर्तमान के साथ प्रस्तुत किया है। 'मोर गौरव जगन्नाथ' में विश्वास करता आम ओड़ि‍या जन अपने परम्परागत आलोक से मुग्ध, रक्षणशील तथा संस्कारवान भी है और हम सबकी तरह अन्धविश्वासी और रूढ़ मानसिकता से ग्रस्त भी। कुनी इसी रक्षणशील परिवार की बड़ी बेटी है, हज़ारहा दायित्वों की साँकलों में क़ैद, गोकि वह उन्हें साँकलें समझती नहीं। वह अपनी लीक आप बनाती, वक्त की सच्चाइयों के रू-ब-रू होते अपने भीतर को जानने और पाने की कोशिश करती है। ओडिशा की पृष्ठभूमि में वहाँ के इन्द्रधनुषी रंगों को समेटे कुनी की यह कहानी सच की तलाश है।

कश्मीरी पंडितों के विस्थापन की पृष्ठभूमि में यह उपन्यास अपनी सांस्कृतिक जड़ों से विच्छिन्न मनों की पीड़ा तथा ग्लोबलाइजेशन से बौराए हमारे मौजूदा वक़्त की कथा है। एक तरफ़ लोग कहीं मजबूरन तो कहीं नए दौर के प्रवाह में अपनी जड़ों से उखड़ रहे हैं तो दूसरी तरफ़ जीना एक वैश्विक स्पर्धा होता जा रहा है। 

कश्मीर से जान बचाकर निकला एक पंडित परिवार अपने जैसे अनेक लोगों के साथ राजधानी ‌दिल्ली में आकर नए सिरे से जीवन शुरू करता है। धीरे-धीरे उनके पैर नई ज़मीन पर अपनी जगह भी बनाने लगते हैं लेकिन यह अहसास कि अगर हम अपने ही देश में शरणार्थी हैं तो फिर दुनिया में कहीं भी रहें, क्या फ़र्क़ पड़ता है; भावी पीढ़ी के लिए निर्णायक बन जाता है। 

कश्मीरी संस्कृति और मूल्यों में रसे-पगे माता-पिता का प्रशिक्षण परिवार को बिखरने तो नहीं देता लेकिन अपने घर-ज़मीन से दूर, महानगरों के परायेपन में सम्बन्धों को उस तरह जीना भी सम्भव नहीं जैसे अपनी भूमि पर अपनी संस्कृति, अपने माहौल के बीच हो सकता था। 

वरिष्ठ कथाकार चन्द्रकान्ता अपने इस नए उपन्यास में कश्मीर से विस्थापित परिवार की कहानी के माध्यम से जैसे वर्तमान का पूरा चित्र ही खींच देती हैं। बुज़ुर्गों का अकेलापन, नई पीढ़ी के भटकाव, सतत एक होड़ में डूबे युवाओं का तनाव, बिखरता दाम्पत्य, पश्च‌िमी संस्कृति और तकनीक के दबाव, विश्व के ‌अलग-अलग हिस्सों में हो रहा विस्थापन, सार्वजनिक स्पेस में स्त्रियों पर होनेवाले हमले और वह सब जो इस दौर को एक शान्त धारा नहीं, भीषण भँवर का रूप देता है; इन सबको लेकर एक गम्भीर चेतावनी यहाँ मौजूद है।

उपन्यास के मुख्य पात्र सुरेन्द्रनाथ का यह कथन कि 'यह समय बूढ़ों का नहीं है' जैसे इस पूरे परिदृश्य पर एक सम्पूर्ण टिप्पणी है। अर्थात धीरता, गम्भीरता, ठहराव, गहराई और प्रकृति के हमक़दम चलने का यह समय नहीं है। देश से लेकर विदेश तक बेलगाम बहती एक गति है जिसके बने रहने के लिए हर किसी की साँसें उखड़ी जा रही हैं। चन्द्रकान्ता की सधी हुई क़लम एक-एक पंक्ति में वैश्विक विडम्बना की एक-एक परत खोलती है।

शैव, बौद्ध और इस्लाम की साँझी विरासतों से रची कश्मीर वादी में पहले भी कई कठिन दौर आ चुके हैं। कभी औरंगजेब के समय, तो कभी अफ़ग़ान-काल में। लेकिन वे दौर आकर गुज़र गए। कभी धर्म की रक्षा के लिए गुरु तेगबहादुर मसीहा बनकर आए, कभी कोई और। तभी ललद्यद और नुन्दऋषि की धरती पर लोग भिन्न धर्मों के बावजूद, आपसी सौहार्द और समन्वय की लोक-संस्कृति में रचे-बसे जीते रहे। आज वही आतंक, हत्या और निष्कासन का कठिन सिकन्दरी दौर फिर आ गया है, तब सिकन्‍दर के आतंक से वादी में पंडितों के कुल ग्यारह घर बचे रह गए थे। गो कि नई शक्ल में नए कारणों के साथ, पर व्यथा-कथा वही है—मानवीय यंत्रणा और त्रास की चिरन्तन दु:ख-गाथा। लोकतंत्र के इस गरिमामय समय में, स्वर्ग को नरक बनाने के लिए कौन ज़‍िम्मेदार हैं? छोटे-बड़े नेताओं, शासकों, बिचौलियों की कौन-सी महत्त्वाकांक्षाओं, कैसी भूलों, असावधानियों और ढुलमुल नीतियों का परिणाम है—आज का रक्त-रँगा कश्मीर? पाकिस्तान तो आतंकवाद के लिए ज़‍िम्मेदार है ही, पर हमारे नेतागण समय रहते चेत क्यों न गए? ऐसा क्यों हुआ कि जो औसत कश्मीरी, ग़ुस्से में, ज्‍़यादा-से-ज्‍़यादा, एक-दूसरे पर काँगड़ी उछाल देता था, वही कलिशनिकोव और एके सैंतालीसों से अपने ही हमवतनों के ख़ून से हाथ रँगने लगा? ‘ऐलान गली ज़‍िन्दा है’ तथा ‘यहाँ वितस्ता बहती है’ के बाद कश्मीर की पृष्ठभूमि पर लिखा गया चर्चित लेखिका चन्द्रकान्ता का बृहद् उपन्यास है—‘कथा सतीसर’। लेखिका ने अपने इस उपन्यास में पात्रों के माध्यम से मानवीय अधिकार और अस्मिता से जुड़े प्रश्नों को उठाया है। इस पुस्तक में सन् 1931 से लेकर 2000 के शुरुआती समय के बीच बनते-बिगड़ते कश्मीर की कथा को संवेदना का ऐसा पुट दिया गया है कि सारे पात्र सजीव हो उठते हैं । सामाजिक-राजनीतिक परिदृश्य में घटे हादसों से जन-जीवन के आपसी रिश्तों पर पड़े प्रभावों का संवेदनात्मक परीक्षण ही नहीं है यह पुस्तक, वर्तमान के जवाबदेह तथ्यों को साहित्य में दर्ज करने से एक ऐतिहासिक दस्तावेज़ भी बन गई है।
