- Description: उपन्यास की रचना-प्रक्रिया तो सैद्धान्तिकी गढ़ती ही है लेकिन एक आलोचक का दायित्व होता है कि वह रचना को व्यावहारिक मनोभूमि पर परखे। गोपाल राय ने अज्ञेय के उपन्यासों को उपन्यास की सैद्धान्तिकी के आधार पर देखते हुए उसके विश्लेषण को व्यावहारिक धरातल पर उकेरा है। यह पुस्तक वस्तुत: अज्ञेय के उपन्यासों की व्याख्या के क्रम में एक आरम्भिक मूल्यांकन का प्रयास है। अज्ञेय का उपन्यास-संसार मूल रूप में ‘शेखर : एक जीवनी’ (भाग-एक 1940 एवं भाग-दो 1944), ‘नदी के द्वीप’ (1951) और ‘अपने-अपने अजनबी’ (1961) तक विस्तृत है। आलोचक गोपाल राय ने इन्हीं उपन्यासों की रचना-भूमि पर अपनी लेखनी चलाई है। इस पुस्तक में अज्ञेय की जीवनी-रेखा, रचना परिवेश, साहित्य सम्बन्धी विचार का परिचयात्मक मूल्यांकन करते हुए; अज्ञेय के औपन्यासिक-संसार की व्यावहारिक समीक्षा लिखी गई है। ‘हिन्दी उपन्यास साहित्य में अज्ञेय का स्थान’ शीर्षक अध्याय उपन्यासकार अज्ञेय के लिए मूल्यांकन के प्रतिमान बनाने का कार्य भी करता है। इस तरह यह पुस्तक अज्ञेय के उपन्यासों के रूप और वस्तु की संरचना पर मूल्यांकन की प्राथमिक पहल करती जान पड़ती है। आशा है कि गोपाल राय की यह आलोचना कृति रचनकार अज्ञेय और उनके उपन्यासों की पड़ताल में पाठकों के बीच एक सेतु-निर्माण का कार्य करेगी।
