1967 में मेडिकल कॉलेज में मेरे द्वितीय वर्ष के दौरान सनातन में मेरी रुचि जर्मन सार्शनिक आर्थर शोपेनहावर की एक पंक्ति से शुरू हुई। मैंने शिवमूर्ति को देखा और जन पाया, इसका जिक्र मेरी इसी किताब में है । पश्चिमी विचारों के प्रभाव में मैं भी मूर्तिपूजा को एक रूढ़िवादी मानसिकता मानता था। मुझे लगा कि हजारों साल से चली आ रही ये मान्यताएँ जिन्हें लोगों ने अंधविश्वास कहकर खारिज कर दिया है, निरर्थक तो नहीं हो सकतीं, जैसे मंगलवार को बाल न कटवाना, हनुमान की नाराजगी से डरना या शनिदेव के कोप से बचने के लिए शनिवार को लोहा न खरीदना । मैं यह सब सोचने लगा । ऐसा लगता है कि ये रीति- रिवाज नाइयों और लोहारों को एक दिन की छुट्टी देने के लिए बनाए गए थे। मार्च महीने में जब घर में शीतला माता की पूजा के लिए बासी भोजन की व्यवस्था देखी तो लगा कि समाज को यह संदेश दिया जा रहा था कि गरमियाँ शुरू होते ही बासी भोजन खाना बंद कर दें। फिर तो मैं सनातन की यात्रा पर निकल पड़ा। मैंने अंधविश्वास कहे ही जाने वाली मान्यताओं पर लोगों से अपने विचार साझा किए और चर्चाओं में शामिल हुआ, लोगों से सकारात्मक प्रतिक्रियाएँ प्राप्त हुईं। मैं यह दावा नहीं करता कि मेरे विचार सौ प्रतिशत सही हैं, लेकिन मैं विश्वास के साथ कह सकता हूँ कि चिकित्सा ज्ञान में मेरी वैज्ञानिक पृष्ठभूमि ने निश्चित रूप से मुझे सनातन प्रथाओं को समझने में सक्षम बनाया है।

पुस्तक हमें बताती है कि आम तौर पर लोग भारत के ‘पहाड़ी’ और ‘मैदानी’ इलाक़ों की ही बात करते हैं। पहाड़ी इलाक़े से उनका अभिप्राय होता है—मात्र हिमालय पर्वत शृंखला तथा मैदानी इलाक़े यानी बाक़ी देश। पृथ्वी पर बड़े-बड़े पर्वतों, जिन्हें ‘पहाड़’ से ज़्यादा कुछ नहीं कहा जाता, और तथाकथित ‘मैदानी’ इलाक़ों के बीच जो बहुत-सी ज़मीन पड़ी है, उसके लिए कोई निर्दिष्ट भौगोलिक नाम नहीं है।
प्रायद्वीप के दक्षिण में नीलगिरि नाम की पर्वत शृंखला है, जिसकी ऊँचाई 9000 फ़ीट है, लेकिन भारत से बाहर और भारत में भी इसे ऐसे इलाक़े के रूप में बहुत कम लोग जानते हैं, जो बीमार लोगों का आश्रय स्थल और विताप (जिसकी छाल से कुनैन बनती है) की नर्सरी है।
यह पुस्तक हमें उन स्थानों का भी भ्रमण कराती है, जहाँ पहुँचना मनुष्य के लिए लगभग दुष्कर है। इसमें नर्मदा घाटी, महादेव पर्वत, मूल जनजातियों, सन्त लिंगों का अवतरण, सागौन क्षेत्र, शेर, उच्चतर नर्मदा, साल वन आदि का भी विस्तार से वर्णन हुआ है।
प्रकृति-प्रेमियों, पर्यटकों तथा शोधकर्ताओं के लिए एक बेहद ज़रूरी पुस्तक।
