फ़िल्म और टेलीविज़न के व्यापक होते क्षेत्र में शिक्षापरक/ज्ञानपरक मल्टीमीडिया कार्यक्रम भी आकर जुड़ गए हैं। ज्ञान और शिक्षा के अपार भंडार को दृश्य-श्रव्य माध्यम से उपलब्ध कराने की चुनौती भारत सरकार के मानव-संसाधन मंत्रालय के अतिरिक्त अनेक अन्य संगठनों ने ली है।
प्रोग्राम प्रोडक्शन के क्षेत्र में यदि अभाव है तो पटकथा लेखकों का है। इसके कई कारण हैं। प्रोग्राम प्रोडक्शन सम्बन्धी तकनीकी प्रशिक्षण देने की तुलना में पटकथा-लेखन के पाठ्यक्रम बहुत कम हैं। जिन संस्थानों में पटकथा-लेखन के कार्यक्रम चलाए जाते हैं, वहाँ प्रायः अच्छे शिक्षकों की कमी बनी रहती है और यह भी ज़रूरी नहीं है कि अच्छा पटकथा लेखक अच्छा शिक्षक भी हो। प्रस्तुत पुस्तक में सिनेमा के इतिहास, सैद्धान्तिकी और समीक्षा इत्यादि पर कोई चर्चा नहीं की गई है, क्योंकि पुस्तक का उद्देश्य पटकथा के व्यावहारिक पक्ष को सामने लाना है।
यह पुस्तक पटकथा-लेखन में रुचि लेनेवाले विद्यार्थियों तथा अन्य सभी पाठकों के लिए बहुत उपयोगी सिद्ध हो सकती है। इस व्यावहारिक निर्देशिका में पटकथा के एक-एक बिन्दु की चर्चा की गई है।
पुस्तक का उद्देश्य है कि इसके माध्यम से पटकथा-लेखन की तकनीक सीखी जा सके।
