अमित कुमार हमारे लिए जंगल की सबसे आकर्षक और साहसिक कहानियाँ लेकर आते हैं। किसी पक्षी की पहली उड़ान से लेकर माँ भालू से मुठभेड़ देखने या युवा बाघ जोड़े को शिकार करते देखने की कहानियाँ। ये मनोरंजक कहानियाँ आपके रोंगटे खड़े कर देती हैं और आप किताब ख़त्म होने तक उसे छोड़ नहीं सकते। तो फिर आप उस भेड़िये की तरह कुछ और चाहते हैं जिसने मानव रक्त का स्वाद चखा है! जितनी विस्तृत कहानियाँ हैं उतनी ही विस्तृत प्रशांत सोनी के चित्र भी हैं। कलम और स्याही के चित्र खूबसूरती से बनाए गए हैं, जो सफेद पृष्ठभूमि पर काले रंग में उभरे हुए हैं।

ये लोक में टहलती हुई कविताएँ हैं। इन्होंने शहर की मुख्यधारा से सिर्फ़ लिपि उठाई है, बाक़ी सब इनका अपना है। नागर मुख्यधारा में रहते-बहते न इन कविताओं को रचा जा सकता है, न पढ़ा जा सकता है। इन्हें लिखने के लिए धीमी हवा की तरह बहते पानी की सतह जैसा मन चाहिए होता है, जो निश्चय ही कवि के पास है। कवि ने इन कविताओं को जैसे धीरे-धीरे उड़ती चिडिय़ों के पंखों से फिसलते ही अपनी भाषा की पारदर्शी प्याली में थाम लिया है, और फिर काग़ज़ पर सहेज दिया है। इनमें दु:ख भी है, सुख भी है, अभाव भी है, प्रेम भी, बिछोह भी, जीवन भी और मृत्यु भी, और इन कविताओं को पढ़ते हुए वे सब प्रकृति के स्वभाव जितने नामालूम ढंग से, बिना कोई शोर मचाए हमारे आसपास साँस लेने लगते हैं। यही इन कविताओं की विशेषता है कि ये अपनी विषयवस्तु के साथ इस तरह एकमेक हैं कि आप इनका विश्लेषण परम्परागत समीक्षा-औज़ारों से नहीं कर सकते। ये अपने आप में सम्पूर्ण हैं; और जिस चित्र, जिस अनुभव को आप तक पहुँचाने के लिए उठती हैं, उसे बिना किसी बाह्य हस्तक्षेप के जस का तस आपके इर्द-गिर्द तम्‍बू की तरह तान देती हैं, और अनजाने आप अगली साँस उसकी हवा में लेते हैं।

संग्रह की एक कविता ‘गड़रिये’ जैसे इन कविताओं के मिज़ाज को व्यक्त करती है—‘वे निर्जन में रहते हैं/ इनसानों की संगत के वे उतने अभ्यस्त नहीं हैं जितने प्रकृति की संगत के/...वे झाड़ों के सामने खुलते हैं/वे झिट्टियों के लाल-पीले बेरों से बतियाते हैं/...वे आकाश में पैदल-पैदल जा रही बारिश के पीछे-पीछे/दूर तक जाते हैं अपने रेवड़ सहित...’

ये कविताएँ अपने परिवेश के समूचेपन में पैदल-पैदल चलते हुए सुच्‍चे फूलों की तरह जुटाई गई कविताएँ हैं; जिनका प्रतिरोध, जिनकी असहमति उनके होने-भर से रेखांकित होती है। वे एक वाचाल समाज को थिर, निर्निमेष दृष्टि से देखते हुए उसे उसकी व्यर्थता के प्रति सजग कर देती हैं, और उसके दम्‍भ को सन्देह से भर देती हैं।
