मरी हुई कुतिया को सूँघकर आगे बढ़ जानेवाला कुत्ता बिम्ब है इसका कि ‘मर्दों की ज़ात एक जैसी होती है’, और यहीं से आगे बढ़ता है राजेंद्रसिंह बेदी का जगप्रसिद्ध उपन्यास ‘एक चादर मैली-सी’ जिसे पढ़कर कृश्णचन्दर ने लिखा था—“कमबख़्त, तुझे पता ही नहीं, तूने क्या लिख दिया है।’’ प्रेमचन्द की आदर्शवादी, यथार्थवाद की परम्परा को आगे बढ़ाने, उसे समृद्ध बनानेवाला यह उपन्यास, जिसे उर्दू के पाँच श्रेष्ठतम उपन्यासों में गिना जाता है, हमारे सामने पंजाब के देहाती जीवन का एक यथार्थ चित्र उसकी तमाम मुहब्बतों और नफ़रतों, उसकी गहराइयों और व्यापकताओं, उसकी पूरी-पूरी सुन्दरता और विभीषिका के साथ तह-दर-तह प्रस्तुत करता है और मन पर गहरी छाप छोड़ जाता है। यह अनायास ही नहीं कहा जाता कि बेदी ने और कुछ न लिखा होता तो भी यह उपन्यास उन्हें उर्दू साहित्य के इतिहास में जगह दिलाने के लिए काफ़ी था।
और यही परम्परा दिखाई देती है उनके एकमात्र नाटक-संग्रह ‘सात खेल’ में। कहने को ये रेडियो के लिए लिखे गए नाटक हैं जिनमें अन्यथा रचना-कौशल की तलाश करना व्यर्थ है, मगर इसी विधा में बेदी ने जो ऊँचाइयाँ छुई हैं, वे आप अपनी मिसाल हैं। मसलन नाटक आज कभी न आनेवाले कल या हमेशा के लिए बीत चुके कल के विपरीत, सही अर्थों में बराबर हमारे साथ रहनेवाले ‘आज’ का ही एक पहलू पेश करता है जिसे हर पीढ़ी अपने ढंग से भुगतती आई है। या नाटक ‘चाणक्य’ को लें जो इतिहास नहीं है बल्कि कल के आईने में आज की छवि दिखाने का प्रयास है। और ‘नक़्ले-मकानी’ वह नाटक है जिसकी कथा अपने विस्तृत रूप में फ़िल्म ‘दस्तक’ का आधार बनी थी, एक सीधे-सादे, निम्न-मध्यवर्गीय परिवार की त्रासदी को उसकी तमाम गहराइयों के साथ पेश करते हुए। उर्दू के नाटक-साहित्य में ‘सात खेल’ को एक अहम मुकाम यूँ ही नहीं दिया जाता रहा है।
प्रस्तुत खंड में बेदी की फुटकर रचनाओं का संग्रह ‘मुक्तिबोध’ और पहला कहानी-संग्रह ‘दान-ओ-दाम’ भी शामिल हैं। जहाँ ‘दान-ओ-दाम’ बेदी के आरम्भिक साहित्यिक प्रयासों के दर्शन कराता है जिनमें ‘गर्म कोट’ जैसी उत्तम कथाकृति भी शामिल है, वहीं ‘मुक्तिबोध’ को बेदी की पूरी कथा-यात्रा का आख़िरी पड़ाव भी कह सकते हैं और उसका उत्कर्ष भी, जहाँ लेखक की कला अपनी पूरी रंगारंगी के साथ सामने आती है और ‘मुक्तिबोध’ जैसी कहानी के साथ मन को सराबोर कर जाती है।

- Description: Oral epics in any Indian language are generally associated with certain specific communities, defined by their traditional occupations; and the present oral epic Koti Channaya belongs to the Billava community. This poetic narrative, which records the life and adventures of the two cultural heroes of the Billava community, their yearning for cultivable land, their brave opposition to the established powerful classes, and their tragic end, is sung by the members of the particular communities called Pambada and Parava of coastal Karnataka, during the annual worship of the twin heroes. The oral epic, Koti Chennaya unravels the world of Billava community (traditionally toddy-tappers) of coastal Karnataka recording in the process the life and adventures as also the travails and tribulations of the two cultural heroes of Billava community. Most of the oral epics begin with a 'Creation Myth', which begins with the creation of the entire universe step by step, thus focuses on the legendary first parents/ancestors of the community concerned. Such a myth, besides glorifying the cultural heroes of the epic, gives a privileged position to the community by linking it with the rest of the world and gives it a socio-cultural identity. Koti Channaya also begins with a 'Creation Myth'. A recent study undertaken by UNESCO says that half of the 6,700 languages spoken in the world at present face the danger of extinction before the end of this century.
