भारत-पाक विभाजन एक ऐसी त्रासदी है जिसकी भीषणता और भारतीय जन-जीवन पर पड़े उसके प्रभाव को न तो देश के एक बड़े हिस्से ने महसूस किया और न साहित्य में ही उसे उतना महत्त्व दिया गया जितना दिया जाना चाहिए था। देश की आज़ादी और विभाजन को अब सत्तर साल हो रहे हैं; फिर भी ढूँढ़ने चलें तो कम से कम कथा-साहित्य में हमें ऐसा बहुत कुछ नहीं मिलता जिससे इतिहास के उस अध्याय को महसूस किया जा सके।
यह आत्मवृत्त इस मायने में महत्त्वपूर्ण है कि इसमें उस वक़्त विभाजन को याद किया जा रहा है जब देश में धार्मिक और साम्प्रदायिक आधारों पर समाज को बाँटने की प्रक्रिया कहीं ज़्यादा आक्रामक और निर्द्वन्द्व इरादों के साथ चलाई जा रही है। पाकिस्तान को एक पड़ोसी देश के बजाय जनमानस में एक स्थायी शत्रु के रूप में स्थापित किया जा रहा है; और सामाजिक समरसता को गृहयुद्ध की व्याकुलता के सामने हीन साबित किया जा रहा है। इस उपन्यास का प्रथम पुरुष मृत्युशैया पर आख़िरी पल की प्रतीक्षा करते हुए सहज ही उन दिनों की यात्रा पर निकल जाता है जब लाखों लोग अचानक अपने ही घरों और ज़मीनों पर विदेशी घोषित कर दिए गए थे, और उन्हें नए सिरे से ‘अपना मुल्क’ ढूँढ़ने के लिए ख़ून के दरिया में धकेल दिया गया था।
उम्मीद है कि इस पुस्तक में आया विभाजन का वृत्तान्त हमें उस ख़तरे से आगाह करेगा जिसकी तरफ़ आज की फूहड़ राजनीति हमे ले जाने की कोशिश कर रही है।

- Description: परियों के बीच उपन्यास एक ऐसे कोमल अहसास और रिश्ते का संसार हमारे सामने उजागर करता है जिसका वजूद हमेशा से रहा है, लेकन ज़्यादातर वक़्तों में यह अनकहा और पोशीदा रहा; कई बार उसे अपनी स्वाभाविक मानवीयता की अनदेखी करनेवाले सवालों का सामना भी करना पड़ा है। दो औरतों, मशहूर तवायफ़ चपला बाई और शायरा नफ़ीस बाई के आपसी प्यार की इस कहानी में उनके कुछ मर्द दोस्त भी हैं जो उनकी मदद करते हैं। इन दोस्तों में कुछ नामचीन शायर हैं तो ख़ुद एक मर्द से प्यार करने वाला शरद भी। उपन्यास में रंगीन, इंशा और जुरअत जैसे उर्दू के कुछ असल शायर क़िरदार के रूप में आए हैं। उनकी शायरी के साथ-साथ उस दौर की कुछेक ग़ज़लों-नज़्मों और गानों का इस्तेमाल उपन्यास की ख़ूबसूरती और असर को बढ़ा देता है। वस्तुत: यह उपन्यास पूर्व-औपनिवेशिक काल के उस दौर को जीवन्त करता है जब समलैंगिक प्यार को अपेक्षाकृत सहजता से स्वीकार किया जाता था। लेकिन 1857 के बाद के दौर में उसको सवालिया बना दिया गया।
