ग़ुलामी भले ही विदा हो गई हो, जाति तो मुसलमानों में क़ायम है ही। उदाहरण के लिए, बंगाल के मुसलमानों की स्थिति को लिया जा सकता है। 1901 के लिए बंगाल प्रान्त के जनगणना अधीक्षक ने बंगाल के मुसलमानों के बारे में यह रोचक तथ्य दर्ज किए हैं—‘मुसलमानों का चार वर्गों—शेख़़, सैयद, मुग़ल और पठान—में परम्परागत विभाजन इस प्रान्त (बंगाल) में प्रायः लागू नहीं है। मुसलमान दो मुख्य सामाजिक विभक्त मानते हैं—1. अशराफ़ अथवा शरफ़ और 2. अज़लाफ़। अशराफ़ से तात्पर्य है ‘कुलीन’ और इसमें विदेशियों के वंशज तथा ऊँची जाति के धर्मान्तरित हिन्दू शामिल हैं। व्यावसायिक वर्ग और निचली जातियों के धर्मान्तरित शेष अन्य मुसलमान अज़लाफ़ अर्थात नीच अथवा निकृष्ट व्यक्ति माने जाते हैं। उन्हें कमीना अथवा इतर कमीना या रासिल, जो ‘रिज़ाल’ का भ्रष्ट रूप है, बेकार कहा जाता है। कुछ स्थानों पर एक तीसरा वर्ग ‘अरज़ाल’ भी है, जिसमें आनेवाले व्यक्ति सबसे नीच समझे जाते हैं। उनके साथ कोई भी अन्य मुसलमान मिलेगा-जुलेगा नहीं और न उन्हें मस्जिद और सार्वजनिक क़ब्रिस्तानों में प्रवेश करने दिया जाता है।
इन वर्गों में भी हिन्दू में प्रचलित जैसी सामाजिक वरीयता और जातियाँ हैं।...
मुसलमानों में इन बुराइयों का होना दु:खद है, किन्तु उससे भी अधिक दु:खद तथ्य यह है कि भारत के मुसलमानों में समाज-सुधार हेतु इन बुराइयों के सफलतापूर्वक उन्मूलन के लिए कोई संगठित आन्दोलन नहीं उभरा।...दूसरी ओर, मुसलमान यह महसूस ही नहीं करते कि ये बुराइयाँ हैं। परिणामतः वे उनके निवारण हेतु सक्रियता भी नहीं दर्शाते। इसके विपरीत, अपनी मौजूदा प्रथाओं में किसी भी परिवर्तन का विरोध करते हैं।

- Description: "जिन दिनों श्रीमती रंजना चितले वीर तात्या टोपे के संदर्भ तलाश रही थीं, तब यह प्रश्न मेरे मन में बार-बार आया कि इन्होंने शोधात्मक लेखन के लिए तात्या टोपे को ही क्यों चुना? जब मैंने रंजनाजी के परिवार के बारे में जाना तो मुझे पता चला कि इनके परिवार का तात्या टोपे और तात्या टोपे की जीवनधारा से पीढि़यों का नाता है। रंजनाजी के पूर्वज तेलंगाना के मूल निवासी थे। अन्य लोगों के साथ इनके पूर्वजों को भी छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज ने हिंदू पदपादशाही के सशक्तीकरण के काम में लगाया था। उन्हें सात पीढ़ी पहले पाँच गाँव की जागीर देकर पीलूखेड़ी में बसाया गया था। पारिवारिक वृत्तांत के अनुसार 1857 की क्रांति के अमर नायक नाना साहब पेशवा ने अपने जीवन की अंतिम साँस इसी स्थान पर ली थी। वहाँ उनकी समाधि बनी है। इसी परिवार ने अंतिम समय में उनकी देखभाल की थी। सिपाही बहादुर सरकार के क्रांतिकारी आंदोलन में इस परिवार ने बढ़-चढ़कर हिस्सा लिया था और 1857 की क्रांति के सेनानियों को पीलूखेड़ी के शास्त्री परिवार से रोटियाँ बनकर जाती थीं। इसी शास्त्री परिवार में जन्मी हैं रंजना, जो विवाह के बाद चितले हो गईं। मुझे लगता है, ऐसी ही प्रज्ञा स्मृति से रंजनाजी वीर तात्या टोपे के व्यक्तित्व अन्वेषण में लग गईं। इस पुस्तक में उन्होंने वे तथ्य जुटाए हैं, जो तात्या टोपे से संबंधित अन्य विवरणों में या तो मिलते नहीं या सर्वदा उपेक्षित रहे। —डॉ. सुरेश मिश्र इतिहासकार एवं लेखक "
