- Description: ‘आचार्य शुक्ल का इतिहास पढ़ते हुए’ साहित्यालोचना की श्रेणी में एक अलग ढंग की पुस्तक है। हिन्दी साहित्य के मानक इतिहास के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित आचार्य शुक्ल की पुस्तक को ‘साहित्येतिहास-लेखन की अत्यन्त प्रौढ़ और प्रगतिशील विरासत’ मानते हुए डॉ. बच्चन सिंह यह भी कहते हैं कि अभी भी अनेक प्रश्न हैं जो उत्तर की माँग करते हैं, बहुत-से बिन्दु है जिन पर विचार किया जाना चाहिए। वे कहते हैं कि शुक्ल जी पहले व्यक्ति हैं जिनके हाथों हिन्दी साहित्य के इतिहास लेखन के लिए एक सुसंगत आधार और उसका पैटर्न तैयार हुआ। इसके लिए उन्होंने जो केन्द्रीय बिन्दु रखा, वह है ‘लोक प्रवृत्ति’, जिसे उन्होंने जनता की चित्तवृत्ति कहा। लेकिन वे इस तथ्य के प्रति भी सजग थे कि जिस चित्तवृत्ति का प्रतिफलन साहित्य में हुआ, उसका सरोकार शिक्षित जन से है। डॉ. बच्चन सिंह आचार्य शुक्ल के बाद आचार्य द्विवेदी के काम को ही उल्लेखनीय मानते हैं, इसलिए इस पुस्तक में दोनों ही विद्वानों के इतिहास-सम्बन्धी कामों पर अकसर साथ में बात करते हैं, जिससे पाठक के रूप में हम और भी लाभान्वित होते हैं। यह पुस्तक आचार्य शुक्ल लिखित इतिहास को पढ़ने के लिए वृहत्तर भूमि तैयार करती है, और अन्य उपलब्ध साहित्येतिहास-ग्रंथों का भी परिचय देती चलती है।

- Description: पिछले पचास साल की हिन्दी कहानी में अनेक बड़े लेखकों के साथ जिन कहानीकारों का नाम अग्रणी रहा और जिन्हें पाठकों ने लगातार पसन्द किया उनमें काशीनाथ सिंह प्रमुख हैं। काशीनाथ सिंह अपने लेखन के लिए लोक से ऊर्जा ग्रहण करते हैं। वे जीवन का महत्त्व समझने वाले कथाकार हैं। सीधी-सच्ची बात कहने के लिए कला की कृत्रिमता उन्हें कभी पसन्द न आई और तभी उनकी कलम से काशी का अस्सीजैसी कालजयी कृति भी सम्भव हुई। लेखक के संसार को जानने-समझने के लिए ही नहीं वरन् उसकी कला के रहस्य को भी समझने के लिए उससे किए गए संवादों का महत्त्व है। काशीनाथ सिंह से समय-समय पर किए गए संवादों के इस संग्रह को वस्तुत: बतकही की संज्ञा अधिक समीचीन होगी क्योंकि काशीनाथ सिंह उस लोक के कथाकार हैं जो विचारों की आवाजाही में विश्वास रखता है। यहाँ संकलित लगभग दो दर्जन संवाद काशीनाथ सिंह के व्यक्तित्व और उनके सृजन सरोकारों को उजागर करने वाले हैं। विचारधारा, राजनीति और समाज की व्यापक बहसें और सवाल इन संवादों को धार देते हैं तो गद्य की कला का मर्म भी इन संवादों को उल्लेखनीय बनाता है। उनके लेखन के उत्तरार्ध में आई अनेक कृतियों यथा रेहन पर रग्घू, महुआ चरित और उपसंहार पर यहाँ अनेक संवाद हुए हैं। इन सबसे अलहदा और ऊपर है बनारस की बोली-बानी में काशीनाथ सिंह की बतकही। सीधी-सच्ची बातें और न हुआ तो दरेरा देकर कह देने का आत्मविश्वास। यह बतकही हमारे संवादहीनता से भरे समय में आत्मीय गपशप का विरल सुख है। इस गपशप में कथाकार अपने साथ पाठक को वैसे ही साथ लिए बैठा है जैसे गाँव में बर्फीली हवाओं में अलाव तापते हुए लोग सुख-दुःख की बात करते हैं। आइए, इस बतकही में शामिल होते हैं और बातों का आनन्द लेते हैं।
