- Description: दस-बारह रोज और बीत गए। दोपहर का समय था। बाबूजी खाना खा रहे थे। मैं मुन्नू के पाँवों में पीनस की पैजनियाँ बाँध रहा था। एक औरत घूँघट निकाले हुए आई और आँगन में खड़ी हो गई। उसके वस्त्र फटे हुए और मैले थे, पर गोरी सुंदर औरत थी। उसने मुझसे पूछा, ‘‘भैया, बहूजी कहाँ हैं?’’ मैंने उसके निकट जाकर मुँह देखते हुए कहा, ‘‘तुम कौन हो, क्या बेचती हो?’’ औरत-‘‘कुछ बेचती नहीं हूँ, बस तुम्हारे लिए ये कमलगट्टे लाई हूँ। भैया, तुम्हें तो कमलगट्टे बड़े अच्छे लगते हैं न?’’ मैंने उसके हाथ में लटकती हुई पोटली को उत्सुक आँखों से देखकर पूछा, ‘‘कहाँ से लाई हो? देखें।’’ स्त्री, ‘‘तुम्हारे हरकारे ने भेजा है, भैया!’’ मैंने उछलकर कहा, ‘‘कजाकी ने?’’ स्त्री ने सिर हिलाकर ‘हाँ’ कहा और पोटली खोलने लगी। इतने में अम्माजी भी चौके से निकलकर आइऔ। उसने अम्मा के पैरों का स्पर्श किया। अम्मा ने पूछा, ‘‘तू कजाकी की पत्नी है?’’ औरत ने अपना सिर झुका लिया। -इसी पुस्तक से उपन्यास सम्राट् मुंशी पेमचंद के कथा साहित्य से चुनी हुई मार्मिक व हृदयस्पर्शी कहानियों का संग्रह।
