ग़ुलामी भले ही विदा हो गई हो, जाति तो मुसलमानों में क़ायम है ही। उदाहरण के लिए, बंगाल के मुसलमानों की स्थिति को लिया जा सकता है। 1901 के लिए बंगाल प्रान्त के जनगणना अधीक्षक ने बंगाल के मुसलमानों के बारे में यह रोचक तथ्य दर्ज किए हैं—‘मुसलमानों का चार वर्गों—शेख़़, सैयद, मुग़ल और पठान—में परम्परागत विभाजन इस प्रान्त (बंगाल) में प्रायः लागू नहीं है। मुसलमान दो मुख्य सामाजिक विभक्त मानते हैं—1. अशराफ़ अथवा शरफ़ और 2. अज़लाफ़। अशराफ़ से तात्पर्य है ‘कुलीन’ और इसमें विदेशियों के वंशज तथा ऊँची जाति के धर्मान्तरित हिन्दू शामिल हैं। व्यावसायिक वर्ग और निचली जातियों के धर्मान्तरित शेष अन्य मुसलमान अज़लाफ़ अर्थात नीच अथवा निकृष्ट व्यक्ति माने जाते हैं। उन्हें कमीना अथवा इतर कमीना या रासिल, जो ‘रिज़ाल’ का भ्रष्ट रूप है, बेकार कहा जाता है। कुछ स्थानों पर एक तीसरा वर्ग ‘अरज़ाल’ भी है, जिसमें आनेवाले व्यक्ति सबसे नीच समझे जाते हैं। उनके साथ कोई भी अन्य मुसलमान मिलेगा-जुलेगा नहीं और न उन्हें मस्जिद और सार्वजनिक क़ब्रिस्तानों में प्रवेश करने दिया जाता है।
इन वर्गों में भी हिन्दू में प्रचलित जैसी सामाजिक वरीयता और जातियाँ हैं।...
मुसलमानों में इन बुराइयों का होना दु:खद है, किन्तु उससे भी अधिक दु:खद तथ्य यह है कि भारत के मुसलमानों में समाज-सुधार हेतु इन बुराइयों के सफलतापूर्वक उन्मूलन के लिए कोई संगठित आन्दोलन नहीं उभरा।...दूसरी ओर, मुसलमान यह महसूस ही नहीं करते कि ये बुराइयाँ हैं। परिणामतः वे उनके निवारण हेतु सक्रियता भी नहीं दर्शाते। इसके विपरीत, अपनी मौजूदा प्रथाओं में किसी भी परिवर्तन का विरोध करते हैं।

- Description: शहीद भगत सिंह ने कहा था : ‘क्रान्ति की तलवार विचारों की सान पर तेज़ होती है’ और यह भी कि ‘क्रान्ति ईश्वर-विरोधी हो सकती है, मनुष्य-विरोधी नहीं’। ध्यान से देखा जाए तो ये दोनों ही बातें भगत सिंह के महान क्रान्तिकारी व्यक्तित्व का निर्माण करती हैं। लेकिन इस सन्दर्भ में महत्त्वपूर्ण यह है कि भगत सिंह की विचारधारा और उनकी क्रान्तिकारिता के ज्वलन्त प्रमाण जिन लेखों और दस्तावेज़ों में दर्ज हैं, वे आज भी पूर्ववत् प्रासंगिक हैं, क्योंकि ‘इस’ आज़ादी के बाद भी भारतीय समाज ‘उस’ आज़ादी से वंचित है, जिसके लिए उन्होंने और उनके असंख्य साथियों ने बलिदान दिया था। दूसरे शब्दों में, भगत सिंह के क्रान्तिकारी विचार उन्हीं के साथ समाप्त नहीं हो गए, क्योंकि व्यक्ति की तरह किसी विचार को कभी फाँसी नहीं दी जा सकती। कहने की आवश्यकता नहीं कि यह पुस्तक भगत सिंह की इसी विचारधारात्मक भूमिका को समग्रता के साथ हमारे सामने रखती है। वस्तुत: हिन्दी में पहली बार प्रकाशित यह कृति भगत सिंह के भावनाशील विचारों, विचारोत्तेजक लेखों, ऐतिहासिक दस्तावेज़ों, वक्तव्यों तथा उनके साथियों और पूर्ववर्ती शहीदों की क़लम से निकले महत्त्वपूर्ण विचारों की ऐसी प्रस्तुति है जो वर्तमान सामाजिक, राजनीतिक स्थितियों की बुनियादी पड़ताल करने में हमारी दूर तक मदद करती है।
