- Description: यह पुस्तक भारत के मध्य भाग के इतिहास के एक विस्मृत अध्याय को और गोंडों के गौरवशाली अतीत को उजागर करनेवाला एक दस्तावेज़ है। गढ़ा का गोंड राज्य बहुधा मुग़ल सम्राट अकबर की सेना से लोहा लेनेवाली वीरांगना रानी दुर्गावती के सन्दर्भ में ही याद किया जाता है और शेष इतिहास एक धुँधले आवरण से आवृत रहा है। यह आश्चर्य की बात है कि केवल दो सौ साल पहले समाप्त होनेवाले इस विशाल देशी राज्य के बारे में अभी तक बहुत कम जानकारी रही है। इस कृति में लेखक ने फ़ारसी, संस्कृत, मराठी, हिन्दी और अंग्रेज़ी स्रोतों के आधार पर गढ़ा राज्य का प्रामाणिक एवं क्रमबद्ध इतिहास प्रस्तुत किया है। वे सभी कड़ियाँ जोड़ दी गई हैं, जो अभी तक अज्ञात थीं। पुस्तक बताती है कि पन्द्रहवीं सदी के प्रारम्भ में विंध्य और सतपुड़ा और विन्ध्याचल के अंचल में गोंड राजाओं ने जिस राज्य की स्थापना की वह क्रमशः गढ़ा, गढ़ा-कटंगा और गढ़ा-मंडला के नाम से विख्यात हुआ। गढ़ा का गोंड राज्य यद्यपि सोलहवीं सदी में मुग़लों के अधीन हो गया, तथापि न्यूनाधिक विस्तार के साथ यह अठारहवीं सदी तक मौजूद रहा। सोलहवीं सदी में अपने चरमोत्कर्ष काल में यह राज्य उत्तर में पन्ना से दक्षिण में भंडारा तक और पश्चिम में भोपाल से लेकर पूर्व में अमरकंटक के आगे लाफागढ़ तक फैला हुआ था और 1784 में मराठों के हाथों समाप्त होने के समय भी यह वर्तमान मंडला, डिंडोरी, जबलपुर, कटनी और नरसिंहपुर ज़िलों और कुछ अन्य क्षेत्रों में फैला था। यह विस्तृत राज्य पौने तीन सौ वर्षों तक लगातार अस्तित्व में रहा, यह स्वयं में एक उल्लेखनीय बात है। राजनीतिक विवरण के साथ ही यह कृति उस काल की सांस्कृतिक गतिविधियों का परिचय देते हुए बताती है कि आम धारणा के विपरीत गोंड शासक साहित्य, कला और लोक कल्याण के प्रति भी जागरूक थे।

- Description: आदिवासी समाज को ज्यादातर रोमांटिक दृष्टि से देखा गया है। सिर्फ उनके हितैषी गैर-आदिवासी कार्यकर्ताओं और विद्वानों द्वारा ही नहीं, बल्कि खुद कुछ आदिवासियों द्वारा भी। कुछ आदिवासी साहित्यकार अपने विमर्श में आदिवासी समाज का जैसा सुन्दर, सर्वांगपूर्ण चित्र खींचते हैं, उस चित्र का खुद उन्हीं के द्वारा लिखी हुई कहानियों और उपन्यास में व्यक्त यथार्थ से कोई मेल नहीं बैठता; दोनों के बीच दूरी और अन्तर्विरोध दिखाई देता है। विमर्श में यह दावा किया जाता है कि दुनिया की सारी समस्याओं का हल आदिवासी समाज दर्शन से ही निकलेगा जबकि आदिवासी खुद कई समस्याओं से घिरे हुए हैं और अपनी ही समस्याओं को हल नहीं कर पा रहे हैं। ऐसा आदिवासी-विमर्श भी एक अतिवाद ही है। जैसे एक अतिवाद यह है कि हमें आदिवासियों का उद्धार करना है, वैसे ही दूसरा अतिवाद यह है कि आदिवासी से ही सबका उद्धार होगा। आदिवासी दर्शन के प्रवक्ता आदिवासी समाज की उन वास्तविकताओं को नहीं देखते, उन कमजोरियों को नहीं देखते जिनके खिलाफ लड़कर आदिवासियों को सचेत करने की जरूरत है। उलटे कभी-कभी ये कमियाँ भी उनकी नजर में गौरवपूर्ण बन जाती हैं। यह एक तरह की मनोवैज्ञानिक क्षतिपूर्ति है। उदाहरण के लिए कुछ लोग कहते हैं कि श्रम आदिवासी जीवन का बहुत बड़ा मूल्य है। यह बात दलितों के प्रसंग में भी कुछ विद्वानों ने कही है। सचाई यह है कि आर्थिक और शैक्षणिक दृष्टि से जितने भी कमजोर और पिछड़े हुए समाज हैं—जिनमें आदिवासी और दलित भारत में मुख्य हैं—उन सबमें श्रम करने का लगभग सारा बोझ स्त्रियों के सिर पर डाल दिया गया। श्रम उनके पुरुषों को भी करना पड़ता है, लेकिन पुरुषों के जिम्मे सिर्फ कुछ एक महत्त्वपूर्ण काम होते हैं तथा उनका बहुत-सा समय सोने, तमाखू पीने, दारू पीने, जुआ खेलने या स्थानीय राजनीति करने जैसे कामों में खर्च होता है। चाहे बर्मा की सीमा पर बसे मिजो आदिवासियों का समाज हो अथवा तिब्बत की सीमा पर बसे भोटियों का समाज हो—सभी आदिवासी समाजों में स्त्रियों को ज्यादा-से-ज्यादा काम करना पड़ता है। —इसी पुस्तक से
