वस्तुतः भीष्म जी का यह उपन्यास एक हवेली अथवा एक क़स्बे की कहानी होकर भी बहते काल-प्रवाह और बदलते परिवेश की दृष्टि से एक समूचे युग को समेटे हुए है और उनकी रचनात्मकता को एक नई ऊँचाई सौंपता है।
