- Description: आधुनिक भारत के महान् चिंतक, समाज-सुधारक व देशभक्त दयानंद सरस्वती का जन्म 12 फरवरी, 1824 को टंकारा में जिला राजकोट, गुजरात में हुआ था। उनके पिता का नाम करशनजी लालजी तिवारी और माँ का नाम यशोदाबाई था। उनके पिता एक कर-कलेक्टर होने के साथ एक अमीर, समृद्ध और प्रभावशाली व्यक्ति थे। दयानंद सरस्वती का असली नाम मूलशंकर था और उनका प्रारंभिक जीवन बहुत आराम से बीता। महर्षि दयानंद के हृदय में आदर्शवाद की उच्च भावना, यथार्थवादी मार्ग अपनाने की सहज प्रवृत्ति, मातृभूमि की नियति को नई दिशा देने का अदम्य उत्साह, धार्मिक, सामाजिक, आर्थिक व राजनैतिक दृष्टि से युगानुकूल चिंतन करने की तीव्र इच्छा तथा आर्यावर्तीय (भारतीय) जनता में गौरवमय अतीत के प्रति निष्ठा जगाने की भावना थी। उन्होंने किसी के विरोध तथा निंदा करने की परवाह किए बिना आर्यावर्त (भारत) के हिंदू समाज का कायाकल्प करना अपना ध्येय लिया था। महर्षि दयानंद ने चैत्र शुक्ल प्रतिपदा संवत् 1932 को गिरगाँव बंबई में आर्यसमाज की स्थापना की। अपने महाग्रंथ ‘सत्यार्थ प्रकाश’ में स्वामीजी ने सभी मतों में व्याप्त बुराइयों का खंडन किया है। स्वामी दयानंद के प्रमुख अनुयायियों में लाला हंसराज ने 1886 में लाहौर में ‘दयानंद एंग्लो वैदिक कॉलेज’ की स्थापना की तथा स्वामी श्रद्धानंद हरिद्वार के निकट काँगड़ी में गुरुकुल की स्थापना की।
