- Description: महा घुमक्कड़ राहुल सांकृत्यायन ने हिमालय के तमाम अंचलों को अपनी आँखों से देखकर उनका परिचय लिखने का निश्चय किया था। उसी निश्चय का एक परिणाम है यह अनूठा भ्रमण-वृत्तान्त— ‘किन्नर देश में’। किन्नर देश से उनका आशय हिमाचल के उस रमणीय भू-भाग से है जो तिब्बत की सीमा पर सतलुज की घाटी में लगभग सत्तर मील की लम्बाई और प्रायः उतनी ही चौड़ाई में फैला हुआ है। यहाँ के प्राचीन निवासियों का ही जाति-नाम है किन्नर अथवा किंपुरुष। उन्हें देवयोनि माना जाता था। इस हिसाब से उनका प्रदेश देवलोक हुआ। स्वाभाविक ही उनके बारे में तमाम तरह की किंवदन्तियाँ और धारणाएँ अन्य समाजों में मौजूद रहीं। लेकिन राहुल ने पाया कि ‘जिस देश में कभी देवता रहते थे वहाँ पीछे पिछड़े मनुष्य रहने लगे’। इस पुस्तक में किन्नरों के समाज, संस्कृति, इतिहास, अर्थतंत्र, रीति-रिवाज, रहन-सहन, धर्म, मान्यताएँ, अन्धविश्वास आदि का विवरण दर्ज करते हुए वे उम्मीद जताते हैं कि इन पिछड़े मनुष्यों का देश फिर से देवलोक बन जाएगा। वस्तुतः इस पुस्तक में राहुल ऐसे एक भू-भाग का दर्शन करते हैं जो भारत का हिस्सा होते हुए भी अधिकतर भारतीयों के लिए अजाना या बहुत ही कम जाना हुआ है। कहना न होगा कि इस पुस्तक में साहित्य के सहृदय पाठकों के लिए एक अजाने-अनदेखे समाज और क्षेत्र का दिलचस्प वृत्तान्त है तो इतिहास, संस्कृति और मानवशास्त्र जैसे विषयों के अध्येताओं के लिए भी अत्यन्त महत्त्वपूर्ण जानकारी।

लेखक के साथ डोंगी भी अपना इतिहास लिखती हुई चलती है। इसमें नदियाँ जीते-जागते किरदारों की तरह हैं, जो कूद-कूदकर पंक्तिबद्ध आती हैं, अठखेलियाँ करती हैं और अपना नाम दर्ज कराती हुई खो जाती हैं।

बांग्ला में ‘सुदूरेर पियासी’ नाम से प्रकाशित और अत्यन्त चर्चित इस पुस्तक में बिमल दे ने अपने उन अनुभवों को अंकित किया है जिनका उनकी चिन्तन-धारा पर दीर्घकालीन प्रभाव पड़ा।
विभिन्न संस्कृतियों, धर्मों, जीवन-शैलियों और प्रकृति के अनेकानेक रूपों को एक सजग आँख से दिखाती यह पुस्तक हमारी सोच और जीवन-दृष्टि को भी विस्तृत करती है, और विविधता से परिपूर्ण इस विशाल संसार में रहने व जीने का सलीका देती है।

निर्मल वर्मा अपनी इस पुस्तक और इसके निबन्धों को भी, दो पूर्ण बिन्दुओं के बीच की कड़ी मानते थे। विधा के रूप में भी ये आलेख यात्रावृत्त और निबन्ध के बीच कहीं ठहरते हैं, ‘जहाँ न भोग का सुख है, न समाधान का निश्चय’। अपने दूसरे यूरोप प्रवास के दौरान उन्होंने यूरोप की धड़कन, उसके गौरव और शर्म के क्षणों को बहुत नज़दीक से देखा-सुना था। इस लिहाज से यह पुस्तक एक ऐसी नियतिपूर्ण घड़ी का दस्तावेज़ है, जब बीसवीं शती के अनेक काले-उजले पन्ने पहली बार खुले थे। दुब्चेक काल का प्राग-वसन्त, सोवियत-स्वप्न का मोह-भंग, पेरिस के बेरिकेडों पर उगती आकांक्षाएँ—ऐसी अभूतपूर्व घटनाएँ थीं, जिन्हें हमारी ढलती शताब्दी की छाया में निर्मल वर्मा ने पकड़ने की कोशिश की, किसी बने-बनाए आइने के माध्यम से नहीं बल्कि सम्पूर्णतया अपनी नंगी आँखों के सहारे।
शायद यही कारण है कि इस पुस्तक के निबन्ध कभी-कभी एक ऐसे ‘निर्वासित’ लेखक के रिपोर्ताज जान पड़ते हैं, जिनमें उन्होंने ‘युद्ध’ के मोर्चे पर घायल संस्कृतियों के घावों को जैसा देखा, वैसा ही आँकने की कोशिश की और भारतीय आत्मसन्तोष से हटकर, ख़ुद अपने देश की व्यवस्था को इन घावों में रिसते देखा।
वैज्ञानिक प्रगति के अकल्पनीय चरणों को पार करने के बाद आज भी जब हम देखते हैं कि इतिहास से न राजनीति ने कुछ सीखा है, न संस्कृतियों और धर्मों ने, तो इन निबन्धों को पढ़ना, इनकी अन्तर्दृष्टि तक पहुँचना और ज़रूरी जान पड़ता है।
