- Description: आज यदि हम किसी स्कूल-कॉलेज में रसायन-विज्ञान की प्रयोगशाला या कक्षा में जाएँ, तो वहाँ दीवार पर टँगा हुआ एक चार्ट अवश्य देखने को मिलेगा। यह है—तत्त्वों की ‘आवर्त्त-तालिका’ का चार्ट, जिसकी खोज रूस के महान वैज्ञानिक दिमित्री मेंडेलीफ (1834-1907 ई.) ने 1869 ई. में की थी। इस आवर्त्त-तालिका को देखने से ही तत्त्वों के परमाणु-भार और उनके अन्य कई गुणधर्मों के बारे में तत्काल जानकारी मिल जाती है। मेंडेलीफ के पहले तत्त्वों के अध्ययन में कोई तारतम्यता नहीं थी। मेंडेलीफ ने तत्त्वों को उनके परमाणु-भार के अनुसार सात स्तम्भों की एक तालिका में सजाया, तो उनमें एक नियमबद्धता दिखाई दी। वस्तुजगत में जहाँ पहले अनेकरूपता दिखाई देती थी, उसके मूल में यह अद्भुत एकसूत्रता प्रकट हुई। मेंडेलीफ ने जब आवर्त्त-तालिका की खोज की, तब वैज्ञानिकों को 63 मूलतत्त्व ही मालूम थे। उस समय आवर्त्त-तालिका में कई स्थान अभी ख़ाली थे। लेकिन मेंडेलीफ के जीवनकाल में 86 तत्त्व खोजे जा चुके थे। आज यदि हम आवर्त्त-तालिका को देखें, तो उसमें 110 के आसपास तत्त्व दिखाई देंगे। उसमें आप यह भी देखेंगे कि 101 नम्बर के तत्त्व का नाम ‘मेंडेलेवियम’ है—मेंडेलीफ की महान खोज ‘आवर्त्त-तालिका’ में स्वयं उनके नामवाला एक तत्त्व। मेंडेलीफ का जीवन परिश्रम, लगन, त्याग और सेवाभाव की एक लम्बी कथा है। वे अपने स्वभाव में ही नहीं, वेश-भूषा में भी एक ऋषि-मुनि जैसे दिखते थे। वे एक सफल अध्यापक थे। उनके विद्यार्थी उन्हें बेहद प्यार करते थे। उनकी शवयात्रा में उनके विद्यार्थी एक लम्बे-चौड़े बोर्ड को ऊपर उठाए आगे-आगे चल रहे थे। उस बोर्ड पर अंकित थी मेंडेलीफ की महान खोज-तत्त्वों की आवर्त्त-तालिका। आशा है, विज्ञान के विद्यार्थी, और अध्यापक ‘मेंडेलीफ’ के इस नए संशोधित संस्करण को प्रेरणाप्रद और उपयोगी पाएँगे।

- Description: जीवाश्मों की तुलना यदि पृथ्वी की आत्मकथा के पृष्ठों से की जाए तो पृथ्वी के विभिन्न भूभागों में इन्हें धारण करनेवाली कोशिकाएँ वस्तुत: बीते हुए कल के अभिलेखागार कही जाएगी। ‘फ़ॉसिल’ शब्द की उत्पत्ति लैटिन भाषा के शब्द ‘फ़ॉसिलिस’ से हुई है जिसमें इसका अर्थ होता है ‘पृथ्वी के गर्भ से निकली हुई वस्तु’। इस प्रकार रोमन साम्राज्य के काल से लेकर अठारहवीं शताब्दी तक भू–गर्भ से प्राप्त प्रत्येक वस्तु को ‘फ़ॉसिल’ की संज्ञा दी जाती रही। इसके पश्चात् वैज्ञानिकों ने इस शब्द की सीमाओं को संकुचित करते हुए जो परिभाषा दी, उसका अभिप्राय है—‘भूवैज्ञानिक अतीत में पाए जानेवाले जीवों के चिह्न’। यद्यपि इनमें प्राणियों अथवा वनस्पतियों के अवशेष, उनके प्राकृतिक समदृश्य, अथवा उनकी जैविक गतिविधियाँ भी शामिल हैं। अत: जहाँ एक ओर जीवाश्मों (फ़ॉसिल) से हमें चर–अचर प्राणियों और वनस्पतियों की उत्पत्ति, विनाश तथा उनके आकृतिक उद्भव की जानकारी मिलती है। वहीं दूसरी तरफ़ वे कालान्तर में महाद्वीपों एवं महासागरों की भौगोलिक स्थिति, ध्रुवों के घूर्णन और भू-पपड़ी के भौतिक विकास का रहस्य भी उजागर करते हैं। जीवाश्मों के विषय में मानव की जिज्ञासा अत्यन्त प्राचीन है। पृथ्वी की आदि–सृष्टि से लेकर आज तक निरन्तर चलनेवाली विकास–प्रक्रिया की उलझी हुई शृंखलाओं को सुलझाने में जीवाश्मों की महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका रही है। यही कारण है कि ‘डायनासोर’ की जीवाश्मीकृत अस्थियों से चिपकी हुई रक्त की एक बूँद में ‘एमिनो–एसिड’ की उपस्थिति ने मनुष्यों की कल्पना शक्ति को नए आयाम दिए हैं। मौलिक दृष्टि से इस पुस्तक में जीवन की उत्पत्ति से लेकर जीवाश्मीकरण की प्रक्रिया से जुड़े हर प्रश्न का समाधान प्रस्तुत करने का प्रयास किया गया है। जीवाश्म विज्ञान से सम्बन्धित नवीनतम शोध–कार्य के मुख्य अंश को संक्षेप में प्रस्तुत किया गया है, जो सम्भवत: राष्ट्रभाषा हिन्दी में अपनी तरह का प्रथम प्रयास है। महत्त्वपूर्ण तथ्यों से साक्षात्कार कराने हेतु अनेक श्वेत–श्याम छायाचित्रों को शामिल किया गया है, जो इस पुस्तक को और भी रोचक तथा ज्ञानवर्धक बनाते हैं।
