जयप्रकाश कर्दम ने इस उपन्यास में विस्तार से एक आदर्शवादी युवक के मानसिक और सामाजिक संघर्ष को दर्शाया है। साथ ही आरक्षण और उच्च स्तरों पर व्याप्त भ्रष्टाचार, जाति-व्यवस्था, जाति के आधार पर दफ़्तरी माहौल में फैले भेदभाव आदि को भी बारीकी से उभारा है। सरल, सहज भाषा में बिलकुल आसपास घटित होती दिखनेवाली यह कहानी पाठकों को निश्चय ही पठनीय लगेगी।

दोस्तोयेव्स्की ने अपने समय के निरंकुश शासन और सामाजिक संरचना में जी रहे आम रूसी लोगों के दारुण यंत्रणा-भरे जीवन और निरन्तर आत्मा पर बोझ डालने वाले अमानवीय परिवेश को, उनके अवसादों, घुटन और खंडित स्वप्नों को, पुरातन मन्थरता की पीड़ा को और साथ ही पूँजीवादी संक्रमण के साथ-साथ जारी सामाजिकता के व्यक्तित्व के विघटन को अपनी रचनाओं का विषय बनाया। अपने दिक्काल के यथार्थ के कलात्मक पुनर्सृजन के लिए उन्होंने जो प्रविधि अपनाई, वह पात्रों के मनोजगत के संश्लिष्ट बहुपरती द्वन्द्वों में गहरे, और गहरे उतरते जाने की प्रविधि थी।
'अपराध और दंड' लेखक के सभी उपन्यासों में सबसे आसानी से पढ़ा जा सकनेवाला उपन्यास है। यद्यपि समझने की दृष्टि से यह एक कठिन और गूढ़ रचना है। इस उपन्यास को लेकर प्रचलित धारणाएँ अपेक्षाकृत सरलीकृत हैं, जिनमें सारा ध्यान उसकी अन्तर्वस्तु के किसी एक पहलू पर केन्द्रित किया जाता है। मसलन, 'अपराध और दंड' को प्राय: एक क़िस्म का 'फ़ौजदारी' उपन्यास माना जाता है अथवा उसे कोरी राजनीतिक कृति समझा जाता है, जो तथाकथित निषेधवादियों अर्थात गत शती के सातवें दशक के विप्लवी और क्रान्तिकारी विचारमना रूसी युवाजन के विरुद्ध लक्षित है।
निस्सन्देह, उपन्यास में ये सभी बातें किसी-न-किसी हद तक मौजूद हैं। दोस्तोयेव्स्की ने हत्यारे की मनोदशा का सूक्ष्मतम, बेजोड़ कलात्मक 'विश्लेषण' किया था। इस बात में भी कोई सन्देह नहीं कि उपन्यास रूसी निषेधवाद से गहरे रूप से सम्बन्धित है। इसी तरह इसमें तनावपूर्ण नैतिक-दार्शनिक मर्म भी भरपूर है। लेकिन मूल बात कुछ और ही है। दोस्तोयेव्स्की के उपन्यासों के मूलाधार में विचार-मानव यानी ऐसे चरित्र हैं जो इस या उस विचार के अन्धाधुन्ध समर्थक हैं। 'अपराध और दंड' इसका साकार रूप है; इसमें नायक ने अपने सर्वस्व को एक भ्रामक ही नहीं, वरन् भयावह विचार के लिए अर्पित कर दिया है...।
