भारत संघ के 26वें राज्य छत्तीसगढ़ की बोली छत्तीसगढ़ी की गणना हिन्दी की पूर्वी शाखा की अवधी और बघेली के साथ की जाती है। 1 नवम्बर, 2000 को छत्तीसगढ़ के पृथक् राज्य बन जाने से छत्तीसगढ़ी को अब राजभाषा का सम्मान प्राप्त है। इस बोली का अध्ययन वैसे तो ग्रियर्सन से आधुनिक काल तक अनवरत रूप से किया जाता रहा है, किन्तु प्रसिद्ध लोकभाषाविद् डॉ. कान्तिकुमार जैन ने 1969 में प्रकाशित अपनी प्रसिद्ध पुस्तक ‘छत्तीसगढ़ी : बोली, व्याकरण और कोश’ में विभिन्न राजनीतिक, प्रशासनिक एवं सांस्कृतिक कारणों से छत्तीसगढ़ी बोली में होनेवाले परिवर्तनों का विशद सर्वेक्षण एवं प्रामाणिक तथ्यों के आधार पर जो विवेचन किया था, वह आज भी निर्विवाद एवं स्वीकार्य
है।डॉ. जैन ने आज से चालीस वर्ष पूर्व छत्तीसगढ़ी के परिनिष्ठित रूप के सम्बन्ध में जो भविष्यवाणी की थी, वह सत्य सिद्ध हुई है। कान्तिकुमार जी जेनेवा के भाषाविद् फर्डिनेंड द सस्यूर की तरह किसी भी बोली को उसके व्यवहारकर्ताओं की मानसिक, समाजशास्त्रीय एवं सांस्कृतिक संरचना से संयुक्त कर देखने के पक्षपाती हैं। उनकी मान्यता है कि आर्य परिवार की बोली होते हुए भी छत्तीसगढ़ी अपने भौगोलिक एवं सामाजिक सन्दर्भों के कारण आर्येतर बोलियों एवं भाषाओं से पर्याप्त मात्रा में प्रभावित हुई है। छत्तीसगढ़ी की उपबोलियाँ भी छत्तीसगढ़ की प्राकृतिक बनावट के कारण अपनी विशिष्टता ग्रहण करती हैं। छत्तीसगढ़ी की शब्दार्थ सम्पदा भी कैसे निरन्तर विकसित एवं समृद्ध हो रही है, इसके विपुल साक्ष्य भी इस पुस्तक में विद्यमान हैं।
छत्तीसगढ़ी क्षेत्र से अपने जीवनव्यापी परिचय एवं छत्तीसगढ़ी के गहन अध्येता होने के कारण कान्तिकुमार जैन ने ‘छत्तीसगढ़ी : बोली, व्याकरण और कोश’ के इस परिवर्धित एवं संशोधित संस्करण में सर्वेक्षण एवं अध्ययन का जो प्रारूप अपनाया है, वह हिन्दी की अन्य बोलियों के विवेचन के लिए आदर्श का काम करेगा।
